The Secret to Magic (That Magicians Don’t Want You to Know… Mostly Because It’s Embarrassing)

Magic. It’s mysterious, enchanting, and, if we’re being honest, 85% awkward hand movements and 15% praying no one notices the coin sticking out of your sleeve.

People often ask me, “Alexander, how do you do it?” And I tell them the truth: years of practice, patience, and pure luck that no one’s paying close attention.

Step 1: Distract the Humans

Misdirection is the magician’s best friend. Want to make a card disappear? Easy—just point dramatically in another direction and say something confusing like, “Did you feel that?” Humans are curious creatures; they’ll look where you point every single time. You could literally be setting their wallet on fire and they’d still follow your finger like a cat with a laser pointer.

Step 2: Confidence Is 90% of Magic

If you mess up a trick (and you will), just smile and act like it was supposed to happen. Drop a card? “Part of the illusion.” Forget the spectator’s name? “I knew you were testing me.” Accidentally reveal the secret? “That was the real trick all along.” See? Easy.

Half the magic isn’t about the trick—it’s about pretending you didn’t just blow it.

Step 3: Keep the Mystery Alive

People always want to know how the trick works. Never tell them. Not because it’s sacred knowledge passed down by ancient sorcerers—but because the explanation is usually disappointing.

“Oh, it’s magnets.”
“Oh, it’s tape.”
“Oh, it’s just me palming it awkwardly for three minutes hoping you’d look away.”

There’s nothing less magical than hearing, “Oh… that’s it?”

Step 4: Remember, It’s Supposed to Be Fun

At the end of the day, magic isn’t about fooling people—it’s about entertaining them. It’s the art of making adults feel like kids again, if only for a moment. You know, before they go back to taxes, emails, and pretending to like kale.

So if you ever try your hand at magic, don’t worry about being perfect. Be funny, be charming, and most importantly, be OK.

Because let’s face it—if you can make a coin vanish and make someone laugh, you’ve already pulled off the most impressive trick of all.
